2011 Performers

Woody Holler and his Orchestra

Woddy Holler

This repertoire is eclectic, fun and fascinating, featuring finger-snapping beats, honey-slowed love croons, and show stoping “extreme” yodeling.

Woody Holler has been yodeling since he was a little shaver.  The first songs he ever heard were old cowboy tunes.  He heard them sung by a family friend at a ranch just down the road from his home in rural Manitoba.

Later he fell in love with jazz and enjoys the cross-over that western swing provides.  In 2009 he hooked up with Winnipeg’s finest jazz musicians and created his orchestra.  They released their debut album Western Skies in 2010.

Since 1996, Woody has also been an opera singer and performs under the name Darryl Brunger.  He uses  his honed lyric technique to bring memorable luster to each performance with his orchestra.

Cara Luft

Cara Luft

Former founding member of Juno award winning folk music trio The Wailin’ Jennys Cara Luft is a rare artist steeped in folk and traditional roots music almost from birth.  Her songwriting is evocative and insightful, her guitar playing fully accomplished and intricate, her voice distinctive, compelling and heartfelt.  Having toured across North America and Europe she will be adding Morden to the list and give us a taste of her brand new album set to release in 2011!

Keri Latimer

Keri Latimer

Juno Award winning songwriter Keri Latimer’s career began in visual arts; however, guitar became too great a distraction and she began to find her voice.  Since 1999, Keri has been fronting the band “Nathan” an “infectious alt-country noir, fractured folk-swing with surreal songwriting” says Acoustic Guitar Magazine.  Currently she is working on a solo album and will share this on-stage at the 2011 festival!

Bill Dowling

Bill Dowling

An inner city Winnipeg boy, half way through life finds himself in a prairie town in Southern Manitoba writing songs about life, love, heroes and villans.  Go figure, Bill fuses the country, folk, blues and rock & roll he was raised on to bring his tunes to life, full of edge, energy and longing.

Since 2008, the release of his debut CD “In the Wood”, the songs have kept on coming.  He is looking forward to producing a follow up album in the coming year and is giving you a taste of it at this year’s festival!

Link and the Moustaches

Link and the Moustaches

Link and the Moustaches began in 2006 as four friends getting together in the basement to jam out the blues.  They soon hit the live stages beginning with the Back 40s “That 60’s Show” performing the songs of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

They have quickly built a following in Southern Manitoba with their energetic and passionate live performances.  Having released their debut album “Hear My Hammer” featuring 11 tracks including two Moustache originals; Back 40 Festival is thrilled to have them back on stage.

3molplaut

3MolPlaut

3molPlaut has been performing for Low-German audiences since 2006.  Translated it means 3 times flat (flat – a common term for Low-German).  Vern and Christina Neufeld along with Ken Sawatzky share a passion for Low-German and comedy.

The music they perform has a upbeat folksy feel to it, and the topics they sing about relate to everyday life seen from a humorous perspective.  They are sure to bring some culture to this years festival with their energetic, upbeat show and offbeat humor.

Broken Branches

Are a group of Southern Manitoba musicians playing music inspired by Cranberries and Counting Crows.  Lead by Jenessa Freeheart and backed by Steve Dueck, Ike Friesen, Scott Bell and Dean Stein.  Made up of people who just love to play you are sure to hear songs from Freeheart’s album “Raw” as well as music with a mind of its own that’s crossing over into a genre not yet described.

Jayme Giesbrecht

I was born and raised in Winkler, showing an interest in music since childhood. I started piano lessons at age 8, and from there often sang while I practiced piano. Growing up attending church, I always had a big place in my heart for Hymns, and soon discovered Southern Gospel music and Gospel quartets. I first sang in church at age 11, and since then have done many other Southern Manitoba churches, weddings, funerals, fundraisers, and festivals, including the Winkler Harvest Festival, Morden Corn&Apple, and Darlingford Strawberry Social. Singing at the back 40 folk festival is definitely a highlight for my singing career, and I can’t wait to take to the stage!

Tweeners

Rachel Ashley

Hey, I’m Rachel, and I’m a highschool student who lives in Carman, Manitoba. My favourite thing to do is write songs about what is happening in my life and how I feel about it. :)
I have not been playing or writing music for very long, but I am excited about where it has taken me in a short period of time.  The Back 40 Festival’s Songwriters Workshop was the first official musician networking event I had ever been to and it was really useful to hear tips from people who have been doing this longer than I have.  I am looking forward to playing at the Back 40 Festival this year.

Ravae McDonald

Ravae is a farm girl from southern Manitoba.  The peace and tranquility of country life allows her to write music about personal experiences.  As a 16 year old, she sings insightful love songs with her guitar and draws the audience into the longings of her heart.  She just completed recording her first demo in early 2011 called “Looking For You” and is hoping to record a full-length CD by the end of 2011.  Ravae has performed at Art Shows, Canada Day celebrations, and Songwriter’s Circles. She was recently featured on “Made in Manitoba” Golden West Radio and looking forward to being a part of the 2011 Back 40 Festival in June.
